Chapter Eleven

The next morning, Paul and I were standing outside the sheriff’s office. We’d managed to catch him before he went on patrol and were waiting for him to finish up a phone call.

I elbowed Paul and pointed down the hall.

“Can you believe you were behind those bars?” I teased.

“In this town?” He laughed. “Yes, I can.”

“Are you saying we don’t have Washington’s finest here in Apple Grove?” I whispered.

“I’m saying, I think the sheriff would prefer if the bad guys would just turn themselves in before he has to do any investigative work.” Paul grinned, and I wiggled my brows.

“Tell me how you really feel.”

But I certainly didn’t blame him. After all, Paul was wrongly arrested and accused of his own aunt’s murder.

Sheriff Boden excelled at taking the easy way out, but I was hoping that Aunt Molly might be able to lure him away from the dark side.

“What can I do for you, Katie?” The sheriff motioned us into his office.

He was sitting behind a large metal desk with piles of papers surrounding him.

“I was wondering what happened to the canoe.”

“The canoe?” The sheriff’s brows furrowed.

My eyes widened in frustration, and Paul squeezed my hand. “The canoe that Arthur Turner was supposed to be using before it turned up empty?”

“Oh, right.” The sheriff shook his head. “It’s in a storage unit.”

“In town?” I asked.

He nodded.

“Can I see it?”

“It’s evidence,” he answered matter-of-factly.

“Are you saying there has been a crime committed?” I asked, wondering if he was starting to see the light. “I thought it was nothing more than an accidental drowning and a mix-up at the funeral home.”

“I’m not at liberty to say.”

“Or you don’t know.” I crossed my arms over my chest.

“What do you think the canoe will tell you?” The sheriff asked.

“I don’t know. That’s why I want to look at it.” I smiled, and the sheriff looked exhausted.

“Will you leave me alone for the rest of the week if I let you look at it?”

I nodded. “Absolutely.”

“Fine.” He handed me a key and a note with the unit number and gate code written down.

“You’re just going to let me see it?”

“Like you said, there’s no crime involved here. We’ve got a mix-up at the funeral home and an accidental drowning. You work for the Turners. The canoe is technically theirs now.”

I nodded. “Well, thank you. I appreciate it… and, oh. Where was the canoe found floating?”

“North shore by the public park. The body wasn’t found too far away.”

“I see, and the body was fully submerged?”

“The body was tangled up in some brush along the bank where some alders went down but were fully submerged.”

“Thanks.”

The sheriff nodded. “You can just give your aunt the key back, and she’ll get it to me. Make sure to tear up the gate code.”

“Will do.” I gave a quick wave and spun on my heels with Paul right behind me.

“That was a little too easy,” Paul whispered.

“And I’d prefer not to think why.” I laughed, as Aunt Molly and the sheriff popped into my head.
